Wildlife
photographer

Tanzania is my home. The wild is my studio.

I'm Frank John, a wildlife photographer based in Tanzania. Most of my days start before sunrise, in the parks: following a cheetah across open grass, waiting for a lioness to lift her head, watching for the small birds most visitors drive straight past.

Living here changes how you photograph. I don't have to rush a sighting because a flight leaves tomorrow. I can come back to the same animal, in the same place, until the light and the moment are right.

No two mornings on the savanna are the same. The light shifts, the animals move on, and a scene you saw yesterday is gone for good. That is what keeps me going back.

Whether you join me on safari, book a workshop, or take home a print, I want you to see Tanzania the way I do: up close, unhurried and honest.

Every animal has a story. My job is to be there, quietly, when it tells it.

WORKSHOPSSEE WORKSHOPS

Out on the plains, nothing else exists.

The engine goes quiet. The radio is off. For a few hours it is just you, the grass, and an animal that has no idea it is being watched. That feeling is the reason I picked up a camera, and it is what I most want to share with the people I guide.

Good wildlife photography starts long before you press the shutter. It starts with knowing the animal: how a cheetah scans the horizon before a hunt, when a lion is about to yawn, which branch a bird will come back to. Read the behaviour and you can be ready for the moment instead of chasing it.

Patience over burst mode.

Holding the shutter down and hoping for luck rarely works. I would rather watch, wait, and take one frame at exactly the right instant: the turn of a head, a direct look into the lens, the last warm light on a face.

That instant will never happen the same way again. With the right preparation and a bit of patience, it can be yours to keep.

"I don't chase animals for a picture. I learn where they will be, get there first, and wait. The best photographs in Tanzania go to the people who are patient enough to let the moment come to them."
